Temple Wood stone circle

Above: Temple Wood is a Neolithic stone circle in Kilmartin Glen, Argyll. The monument we see today is the result of a long sequence of construction. The standing stones were originally free standing, but were encased in cairn material as the monument was adapted into a place of burial. Large cists (stone coffins) were constructed, one of which is visible at the centre of the circle. Some of the stones used to build the cists may have been reused from a dismantled stone circle nearby.

At least two of the standing stones were carved with symbols. One displays conjoined spirals. Another has two concentric circles. Two other visible stones have possible cup marks, and one has unusual markings which might not be prehistoric.
